Congressman wants Lawmakers to enroll in Government Health Care

By Albert N. Milliron, Editor Politisite.com and Iron Mill News

govHealthCar2If Government Health care is good enough for the American people shouldn’t it be good enough for the legislators themselves?  Congressman John Fleming M.D. (R-LA Dist 4) House Resolution 615 would require lawmakers to enroll in the government-run health plan it passes for the rest of Americans.

Under the current draft of the Democrat health care legislation, members of Congress are curiously exempt from the government-run health care option, keeping their existing health plans and services on Capitol Hill. If Members of Congress believe so strongly that government-run health care is the best solution for hard working American families, I think it only fitting that Americans see them lead the way. Public servants should always be accountable and responsible for what they are advocating, and I challenge the American people to demand this from their representatives.

What (H. Res 615)  would do is put each member of Congress,  who have especially good medical coverage through the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program (FEHBP), on record to accept or reject the same health coverage they are pushing on all Americans.  This vote would be quite telling.  Congress has many benefits that are not offered to America in General.  One benefit is for their children commonly referred to as Vouchers. Members of Congress can put their children in private schools while they continually vote against the same benefits for all Americans.

Congressman Fleming is asking Americans to call their congressman and request that (H. Res 615) be included in the amendments to the Health Care Bill.  He has provided a Support Letter for House Resolution 615 to send to your representative as well.

Joe Wilson – Wilson: “If a government-run health plan is good enough for the American people, it is good enough for Congress.”

WASHINGTON – Congressman Joe Wilson (SC-02) delivered the following remarks on the floor of the House of Representatives this morning highlighting his amendment that was adopted during the Education and Labor Committee markup of the Democrat health care bill which would provide that Members of Congress who vote in favor of a government-run health care plan enroll in that plan themselves.

“Mr. Speaker, as Democrats push for a government takeover of health care, I hope they will abide by a very simple standard: if a government-run health plan is good enough for the American people, it is good enough for Congress.

“During consideration of the over 1,000 page bill in the Education and Labor Committee, I successfully got an amendment passed that would provide that Congress members who vote in favor of government-run health care to enroll in that plan themselves. The American people should monitor that this provision is kept in the bill.

“I want to commend Congressman John Fleming, a physician, for originally promoting this concept of fairness. I urge my Democrat colleagues to adopt this standard if they insist on dragging a big government bureaucracy between patients and doctors. The American people deserve better to protect jobs.

“In conclusion, God bless our troops, and we will never forget September 11th in the Global War on Terrorism.”

In addition to the enrollment amendment, Congressman Wilson also successfully had the committee adopt an amendment to shield the men and women of our armed forces from onerous mandates and possible coverage deterioration as a result of the Democrat’s complex new health care governing scheme. Specifically, the Wilson Amendment exempted TRICARE from the “pay-or-play” employer mandate and other benefit mandates that would place an additional burden on this program that serves military personnel and their families.

Thank you for offering this resolution. I noticed my representative’s name is missing – John Yarmouth – he’ll be getting a letter.

I personally would make the wording a bit stronger: “Expressing the sense of the House of Representatives that Members who vote in favor of the establishment of a public, federal government run health insurance option shall be denied their right to participate in the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program (FEHBP) and shall be required to enroll under that public option.”

Additionally, I would add that the President, Vice President, and all appointed members of government shall be required to enroll in the public, federal government run health insurance option.

If “it” is supposed to be good enough for America, then it is good enough for our elected and appointed officials. I see no need to create a class society around healthcare.

    Hey… error, it’s House ‘SIMPLE’ Resolution 615. You should say (H. Res 615) not (HR-615) that’s antifreeze.

There are a lot of ways to quote a bill. But I don’t want folks to think the Resolution is antifreeze! Thanks for your comment. I will look at the recommended way to reference a bill and make changes if necessary. I do like the way (H. Res 615) looks

I worry about the Obama Healthcare Plan. Will it have dehabilitating effects on my families ? Do the improvements to healthcare overshadow the cons?
