DHS releases hundreds of illegal immigrants ahead of Sequestration but are 10% under Budget

The Department of Homeland Security has started releasing hundreds of illegal immigrants held in local jails in anticipation of automatic budget cuts, in a move one Arizona sheriff called politically motivated — and dangerous.

illegals_releasedPinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu said Tuesday that Immigration and Customs Enforcement released more than 500 detainees in his county alone over the weekend. A spokesman for Babeu told FoxNews.com that ICE officials have said they plan to release a total of nearly 10,000 illegal immigrants.

The numbers, though, are in dispute. ICE officials said that it’s unclear how many ultimately might be released and that only 303 have been released from four Arizona facilities so far, though all those are in Pinal County. According to ICE, 2,280 detainees are still in custody in those facilities.

Some are saying this action may ‘impeachable offense’ as Sequestration hasn’t taken place and ICE had 10% less immigrants in custody

“In what used to be considered – if we can remember this far back – normal, sane times, this is an impeachable offense,” broadcaster Rush Limbaugh said Wednesday. “This is action being taken against the country. … It is sheer madness to be doing this. It is petulant, it is childish.”

“This is in direct violation of the oath of office,” he continued. “Defend and protect the Constitution of the United States, and the people. We’re just opening the doors of prisons before the sequester has even happened. Before there have even been any budget cuts. This is so childish, except the consequences are real for people that live nearby these detention centers. This is on-the-ground, hard, cold reality.

Brewer: Release of Hundreds of Illegals Ahead of Cuts ‘Height of Absurdity’

Arizona officials — from the statehouse to Capitol Hill — were outraged on Tuesday at the Obama administration’s release of hundreds of illegal immigrants held in local jails to save money as huge budget cuts loom.

“I’m appalled to learn the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has begun to release hundreds of illegal aliens from custody, the first of potentially thousands to soon be freed under the guise of federal budget cuts,” said Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer, who has long battled the White House on immigration matters. “This is pure political posturing and the height of absurdity, given that the releases are being granted before the federal sequestration cuts have even gone into effect.”

Congressman calls Obama Bypassing Congress  “Back-Door Amnesty”

Congressman Diane Black (R-TN) issued the following statement regarding today’s announcement by the Obama administration on its immigration enforcement policies:

“Once again, President Obama is prioritizing election-year politics and illegal immigrants ahead of the rule of law and the American people.  His policy change amounts to back-door amnesty that will be funded on the backs of hard-working, law-abiding Americans. When unemployment remains above 8 percent, for some reason the President thinks it’s a good idea to add hundreds of thousands of new people to the job market to compete with Americans for jobs. That’s insulting to the millions of unemployed Americans,” said Congressman Black. “I have sent a letter to the President calling on him to reverse his decision. As long as the decision stands, I will pursue all means necessary whether that’s through legislation or the court system to fight this outrageous power-grab by the President.”

The following is a copy of the letter Congressman Black sent to President Obama:

June 15, 2012

President Barack H. Obama

The White House

1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW

Washington, DC 20500

Dear Mr. President:

I am outraged by today’s announcement that your administration will stop the deportation of some 800,000 people who are in our country illegally.  Not only does this undermine our country’s rule of law, it is an abuse of executive power.

By going around Congress to offer backdoor amnesty to nearly a million people, your administration is in direct violation of the separation of powers as defined in the U.S. Constitution. When we should be focusing on enforcing and strengthening our existing immigration laws, your initiative is a blatant breach of faith with the American people.

With unemployment at a staggering 8.2 percent, your policy would grant work permits to hundreds of thousands of people currently ineligible to work in this country. The consequences of this policy will be incredibly damaging to unemployed Americans.

This policy change amounts to back-door amnesty that will be funded on the back of hard-working, law-abiding Americans. Illegal immigration already costs U.S. taxpayers roughly $113 billion each year. Granting work visas for nearly a million illegals is unconscionable when millions of Americans are unemployed. Not only will they be competing with Americans for jobs, but they will likely be eligible for guaranteed services and benefits – costing law-abiding taxpayers even more as the U.S. debt surges towards 16 trillion dollars.

I am asking that you not bypass Congress in your attempt to grant amnesty to hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants on U.S. soil. As Commander-in-Chief, you took a Constitutional oath to uphold the laws of our land. You cannot continue to willfully ignore the laws and intent of Congress.

Sincerely,

Congressman Diane Black
