Obama Gaffe: Flat Earth Society believes in Global Warming

Obama might do well to research more before he makes snide remarks.

obama-flat-earth-societyPresident Obama angrily blasted climate change skeptics during his energy policy speech Tuesday at Georgetown University, saying he lacked “patience for anyone who denies that this problem is real.”

“We don’t have time for a meeting of the flat-Earth society,” Obama said. “Sticking your head in the sand might make you feel safer, but it’s not going to protect you from the coming storm.”

Actually, even the Flat Earth Society believes in climate change:

As it turns out, there is a real Flat Earth Society and its president thinks that anthropogenic climate change is real. In an email to Salon, president Daniel Shenton said that while he “can’t speak for the Society as a whole regarding climate change,” he personally thinks the evidence suggests fossil fuel usage is contributing to global warming.

Flat Earth Society, Like Obama, Believes in Global Warming

The Flat Earth Society however objects to being depicted as being skeptical of Global Warming. As devotees of imaginary science, the Flat Earth Society, like Obama, earnestly believes that cow flatulence is endangering the flat planet.

The Flat Earth Society is a real group, and its president says he believes climate change is real. He also doesn’t like being used as an example of backward thinking on the issue.

“For what it’s worth, the Flat Earth Society doesn’t have an ‘official’ position on climate change. That falls a bit outside our remit,” Flat Earth Soceity President Daniel Shenton told Business Insider in an email from England.

“Personally, though, I believe the evidence available does support the position that climate change is at least partially influenced by human industrialisation.”

Actually, even the Flat Earth Society believes in climate change

“I don’t take things like that personally, though. I know the Society’s views are quite unorthodox,” he said. “Most people react quite strongly to them because the Round Earth model is so deeply ingrained in them since childhood — it’s one of those ‘facts’ that doesn’t need to be challenged. When an opposing viewpoint is presented, it’s summarily dismissed as ‘crazy’ or ‘backward’.

“It’s unfortunate that Flat Earth Theory is what some people (President Obama, for instance) choose to reference when they need an example of something absurd,” he added.

  1. CO2 increase from 1800 to 2001 was 89.5 ppmv (parts per million by volume). The atmospheric carbon dioxide level has now increased since 2001 by 25.46 ppmv (an amount equal to 28.4% of the increase that took place from 1800 to 2001) (1800, 281.6 ppmv; 2001, 371.13 ppmv; May, 2013, 396.59 ppmv).

The average global temperature trend since 2001 is flat. http://endofgw.blogspot.com/

Rationalize that the temperature increase to 2001 was caused by a CO2 increase of 89.5 ppmv but that 25.46 ppmv additional CO2 increase had no effect on the average global temperature trend after 2001.

A simple equation at http://climatechange90.blogspot.com/2013/05/natural-climate-change-has-been.html calculates average global temperatures since they have been accurately measured world wide (about 1895) with an accuracy of 90%, irrespective of whether the influence of CO2 is included or not. The equation uses a single external forcing, a proxy that is the time-integral of sunspot numbers. A graph is included which shows the calculated temperature anomaly trajectory overlaid on measurements.
