Hilton pleads guilty to killing hiker, spared from death
Meredith Emerson, 24, disappeared New Year’s Day
As Meredith Emerson’s parents looked on, Gary Michael Hilton pleaded guilty to a charge of murder Thursday in Dawson County Superior Court.
Hilton pleaded guilty to murdering Emerson, 24, who disappeared while hiking on New Year’s Day in north Georgia. His plea was in exchange for a life sentence.

From the 10 pm News Conference: The Georgia Hiker case has come to a sad ending. Gary Hilton was arraigned today in The Union County Courthouse. Investigators had been questioning him since he was picked up in North Atlanta on Jan 4th. Investigators were able to search his vehicle and found blood stained clothing along with Some of Meredith’s personal effects. Hilton was then charged with Kidnapping with Bodily Injury. The status of the search was changed to search and recovery which usually means the victim is deceased.
Following Hilton’s arraignment, he told Investigators where Meredith’s body would be found. This evening he led investigators to her body in Dawson County which is a few miles north of where Meredith’s dog was found and one county south from the trail where Hilton was seen with Emerson in Union County. Her remains were sent to Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab. The investigation continues.

11Alive’s Kevin Rowson has been able to confirm from family members that the body of missing hiker Meredith Emerson has been found.
Dawson County officials along with the GBI have called a 10 p.m. news conference to announce that her body has been located.
