Outside Surprise police headquarters, a sleepy-eyed toddler quietly sucked his baby bottle of Powerade as his father, Brett Wolfe, held him close, occasionally brushing his check against the boy’s hair.
For the preceding 24 hours, Wolfe lived through what he called “a nightmare,” as the disappearance of his 1½-year-old -year-old son, Michael, and a live-in baby-sitter launched a statewide Amber Alert on Thursday morning.
Collaborating with the FBI and U.S. marshals, Surprise police located the unharmed toddler and the 15-year-old nanny at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Newport Apartments complex at Dysart Road and Van Buren Street in Avondale, said Sgt. Randy Rody, a Surprise police spokesperson.
Police were unable to disclose why the child was taken or what led investigators to the apartment complex. But in the wake of the ordeal, Wolfe offered this advice to parents dealing with unknown baby-sitters:
“Don’t ever trust what someone tells you. Get their ID. Check them out.”
At a news conference after he was reunited with his son, Wolfe told reporters Michael came through the crisis unfazed.
“He’s good, he needs a nap, he’ll be fine,” Wolfe said.
Cheryl Wolfe of Kingman, the toddler’s paternal grandmother, also met the child at police headquarters. She had driven to Surprise Thursday morning after learning of the Amber Alert through a neighbor.
“I’m just glad my baby is safe,” she said through tears.

UPDATE – The Child has been found!
Authorities have found a 20-month-old boy after issuing an Amber Alert about 12 hours earlier.
Surprise police spokesman Sgt. Randy Rody said both the boy and his 15-year-old babysitter are safe and well.
“Amanda Rainey and Michael Wolfe were located in the city of Avondale at an apartment complex,” said Ortega.
Rainey is currently being questioned at the police department.
Authorities issued the alert for the boy, Michael Wolfe, early Thursday
morning. They said the boy was last seen Wednesday afternoon in the
care of Rainey.
Rainey represented herself as a 19-year-old nanny on the website,
Craig’s List, Surprise police said. She was hired as a live-in nanny
for Michael Wolfe on Monday.
“What we’re finding out now is that she’s actually 15-years-old, she is
a runaway,” said Mark Ortega with Surprise police. “She’s from Gilbert.
She does have a criminal history.”
The Amber Alert issued for the child said Rainey is a methamphetamine user.
