S.C. Republicans could seek Jake Knotts’ removal so R does not mean Racist

State Republicans could remove Sen. Jake Knotts from the party in an unprecedented vote this weekend, barring him from running as a Republican for any office in South Carolina, Greenville County GOP Chairman Patrick Haddon said today.

Haddon joined the Upcountry Coalition of Conservative Organizations in calling for the state GOP’s executive committee to oust the Lexington Republican, who has been under fire for his use of a racial slur during an online talk show earlier this month.

“We would like to let everybody to know that when you have an ‘R’ after your name in South Carolina, it stands for Republican, not racist,” said Harry Kibler, state chairman of the Patriotic Resistance and national chairman of the RINO Hunt.

Haddon, first vice-chair of the state GOP, said removing Knotts would take 26 votes from the 48-member executive committee, which meets Saturday.

“We believe we have that,” he said.

If the measure passes, Knotts would still be able to vote as a Republican and finish his term but would have to change his party affiliation in the next legislative manual, Haddon said.
