Boehner offers Obama a new Fiscal cliff deal

House Speaker John Boehner’s office gave the White House a new offer in fiscal-cliff talks, a Boehner spokesman said Tuesday, as the White House and congressional Republicans spent the day publicly pushing each other for details about how they will avoid tax increases and spending cuts set to begin next year.

boehner“We sent the White House a counter-offer that would achieve tax and entitlement reform to solve our looming debt crisis and create more American jobs,” Boehner spokesman Michael Steel said.

He said Republicans’ offer was in response to a new White House offer but wouldn’t describe the GOP offer in detail.

Publicly, a deal to avoid the fiscal cliff remained elusive with a deadline about three weeks away, even as negotiations were going on behind the scenes.
