2013 Kentucky Derby, Entries, Favorites, Odds
The 2013 Kentucky Derby is upon us and we are as excited as anyone. The 139th running of the historic race at Churchill Downs will take place as usual on the 1st Saturday in May and that day this year falls on May 4.
Here are the entries, post positions and morning line odds for the field:
1. Black Onyx is SCRATCHED
2. Oxbow – Trainer D. Wayne Lukas – Owner Bluegrass Hall LLC – Odds 30/1
It took four races to break his maiden. He had starts at Saratoga, Keeneland and Churchill Downs before winning at Churchill. He shipped out West and finished 4th in the CashCall Futurity at odds of 60/1. It was a completely different performance when shipped to Louisiana to run in the LeComte Stakes (G3) at Fair Grounds. The Awesome Again colt took the early lead in the One Mile and 70 yards race and never relinquished it. He drew off down the stretch to win by a whopping 11 1/2 lengths. He finished in 1:43.30. It might not have been as deep as the CashCall but nonetheless, it was a performance that put his mark on the division as we head onto the Derby Trail. In the Risen Star, going 5-wide on the first turn most likely did him in late as he couldn’t hold off the late challengers after holding the lead at the top of the stretch. He finished 4th beaten just 1/2 length. He ran well again in the Rebel Stakes, but could not hold off the late challenge of Will Take Charge. He lost by a head. The busy schedule might have caught up to him as he finished an 5th in the Arkansas Derby, but was no match for Overanalyze. Jockey Gary Stevens

You can throw out the first three races for this War Pass colt as his last three races have been impressive. He broke his maiden at Aqueduct on December 28 by 8 1/2 lengths going one mile on the dirt in 1:34.62. Just .73 off the track record. His win in the Withers Stakes (G3) at Aqueduct on February 2 was quite impressive considering he was last early on, was steadied on the back stretch, bumped a couple of times at the top of the stretch and had no room to move as they came down the lane. With 1/16 mile remaining, jockey Javier Castellano finally found room and he exploded to get up and win by a head. In the Louisiana Derby (G2) at Fair Grounds, he ran quite green again, even when he gained the lead down the stretch. It looked as if Mylute was going to take off on him as he relinquished the lead. However, the colt dug in, came back and won by a neck. He finished the 1 1/8 miles in 1:50.28. You have to love the fight that this horse has brought in winning both of the stakes races. That determination will bode well for him come Derby day. Jockey Calvin Borel
