FactCheck: Obama wants Marines to wear Girly Hats – False

Girly Marine Cap Story False

Politisite asked our Military Affairs writer to follow up on the story: Obama wants Marines to wear ‘girly’ hats

marine_unisex_hatThe story said that President Obama is trying to emasculate male Marines by making them wear a girly cover with their famed dress uniforms.

The only problem? It’s not true.

We received an email from the Marine Corps that stated in the strongest terms there is no truth to reports that President Obama is behind a potential change to Male Marine head gear.

Just spoke to CMC.  He wants to aggressively debunk the Post/Fox stories.

1. The President in no way, shape or form directed the Marine Corps to change
our uniform cover.

2. We are looking for a new cover for our female Marines for one overriding
reason:  the former manufacturer went out of business.

3. The Marine Corps has zero intention of changing the male cover.

Please disseminate as widely as possible.

Standing by, should you have questions.

Thanks to Henry “Bud” Morgan for mentioning this story in the Joplin Globe article, ‘Don’t be duped, check it out’

So what do we do to ensure we are not duped by the system? First, do not accept the story as true merely because it appears in a print publication, on a TV news program, on talk radio, or someone’s blog. If you have reason to suspect the validity of the story, check it out.

The very best way, in my opinion, is to refer to the fact-checking sources. There are several out there, but the very best, I believe, is the Pulitzer Prize-winning Politifact, published by the Tampa Bay Times and the source I relied on for much of the factual information in this article. Also very good are Politisite and Snopes, whose results usually mirror those of Politifact. All have websites where their information can be accessed.
